Being Healthy and Fit

Laura and I had a pretty good conversation today. We don't need to say how long it was..... That isn't the point :P. In talking with her I was reminded about how there is more than just the singular type of being fit or healthy. There are lots of dimensions. I'll list some of the ones that are immediately on my mind. Feel free to add your thoughts.

Physical Fitness
Obviously this is kind of what the focus has been on since we have the weight loss thing on the top, but it really shouldn't be the only one. Can you imagine a life where this is all you cared about? Obviously it would be pretty sad. It can improve your overall lifestyle and well-being though. I've read a lot recently about what 'healthy' is. There are a lot of doctors and such that are trying to stay away from picking a person's healthiest weight. One thought that was shared was that you should aim on getting your waist to be measured as half of what your height is. So, for example, I am 5' 4" or 64 inches tall. Therefore, I should aim on getting to a 32" waist. Studies have shown that your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, many cancers, etc. goes up exponentially when your waist is larger than 1/2 of your height in inches.

Mental Fitness
I find myself needing to take sanity breaks a little more often lately. Maybe it's a little bit of spring fever and just needing to get out of the house. We need to make sure that we are spending a little time on ourselves every now and again. We also need to learn how to manage how we are spending our time. If we have given ourselves more responsibilities than we can handle we end up beating ourselves up for failing when we can't do it all. It's okay to say no sometimes.

Spiritual Fitness
I think this is one of the main ones that comes to mind often. At least I'm pretty sure I think about it a bit. Being fit in this area can carry us through quite a bit. I've got some pretty specific goals in this area to try and keep me on track. I've still got a bit of room for improvement though. Areas to consider are pretty obvious, you know, those seminary answers.
Daily Scripture Study, Family and Personal Prayer, Temple Attendance, a Monthly Meaningful Fast, Fulfilling your Church Callings. I think the list could go on. Those are areas that I want to improve on though.

Fit Relationships with Family and Friends
I think it's important to evaluate how you are interacting with the people around you every now and again, especially those that are close to you that you might not be as polite around.... You know... those moments when you throw maturity out the window and totally act like a spoiled idiot. I'm afraid Phil has seen me at my worse way more than he should have. There is a movie that I love that I would recommend to everyone. It is mainly about a marriage relationship, but I think it could apply across the board. It's called 'Fireproof'. If you haven't seen it you can borrow it. It might be a good one to add to your collection though. Maybe watch it periodically.

I guess I can leave it at that right now. I mainly just wanted to get my thoughts out for myself. If you'd like, go ahead and think about those areas and how you might improve on them. I hope you are all doing well.

  2. Thanks Kelli. :) That was a nice (long) chat. I think it did me some good. :) This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately too... that the number on the scale is only one of many facets of well-being. Thanks again for taking the time to talk, and listen, to me!
